24 Hour Pageant

Covid-19 confinement restrictions have spotlighted the idea of “essential” workers, and so we arrive at this idea of pageantry in a pandemic-hit economy. How do artists shape up? What makes one person’s role more valuable than another? Are we hoping to merely aid survival or bring about bold structural change? Why do we do what we do, and would you encourage new generations to assume a similar role to yours?

Art Meets, Greatmore Studios and VANSA have created a virtual pageant to collectively inspect this idea of “essential work” more closely.

The hosts will perform as themselves for one hour to introduce the event, before each nominating another person to enter the room in their place. As every nominated speaker exits they will in turn “tag” someone new to enter the conversation.

The event format acts as a conceptual foundation in addressing questions about our industry and its ethics. Do we have the collective endurance to create something sustainable? How do we adapt digitally? Who are the audience? Who will dominate the space? Will someone overstay their welcome? Are our networks truly global, and where do they lead?

Join us for the 24 hour pageant livestream on YouTube and let’s figure out if we’re important, together.
